Mental health healing with yoga and therapy

I haven’t posted anything in years. Today is a new day. I am shifting gears and focusing on health and wellness. I had been an Employment Specialist for two years after graduating. The work was rewarding but I did not add enough creativity and healing to the position.

Now I am back working with my Theater company WombWork Productions. www.wombwork.com I am also becoming an 200 hour certified yoga instructor from the Baltimore Yoga Village.

In August I had a significant mental health crisis that almost took my life. Thanks to my support of my family, partner, friends, theater family, therapists, spiritual leaders, doctors, Union Memorial , Baltimore Crisis Response Inc. , AA, and Partnership Development Group.

When I was in intensive therapy and treatment at Baltimore Crisis Response Inc. We would get four breaks to go outside and smoke. Since I was a nonsmoker I started to do my asanas. Sun salutations, warrior 1 and 2, tree, raven and mountain. After a few days a few of my fellows started to join me on the grass because of course I didn’t have a mat. A Tai Chi teacher came and taught us some techniques that added to the daily practice.

My mood has an immediate shift after a practice so when I left BCRI and my mood dropped because the discipline was gone I knew yoga was going to help. I started with YouTube videos 30 days of yoga. Marvin Roxas our Development and Operations Manager suggested I take yoga certification course. Baltimore Yoga Village had a course starting and I applied and I’m on my way to a new life. It feels like such a wonderful world wind. I am anxious and I know yoga on a regular basis will help that. I’d like to open the yoga practice to people like me who have mental health issues, addictions, and trauma. This is an added leg to our support system.
